Horrible as the Lord Under is, the author’s emotionally painted visual images kept my attention, and made me want to know more about him and the bargains he made with all the characters. I already mentioned the imagery, but the impressive part of the writing was how poetically beautiful even the evil moments read. Then they build and build, until all the light is gone, and there’s only me and Arien and the gathering dark. At first they’re smoke, a haze that thickens.
